Review: Copywriting

Copywriting Course

The review for this product took
several weeks to develop. I noticed promotions for this course many
times, both on line and via promotions delivered to my (postal) mailbox, and have also received emails
from some of my subscribers inquiring about it. With so much interest, I
decided it was time to invest my time in reviewing the course.
Initially my interest was fairly mild,
primarily because I already make a respectable portion of my income as a
copywriter. And, I must admit, the price tag made me hesitate more than
a little.
While I've invested in expensive products and seminars before, I wasn't
sure I wanted to do it again for a course that I didn't expect would
teach me much more than I've learned over the years on my own.
Six weeks after starting the course, I
wished I had bought it the first time I ever heard about it. Here's why:
First, this course is nothing like the
traditional school teachings of copywriting. You'll learn the basics in
school, but I've yet to see this information included in any classroom.
And, in my opinion, this is must-have stuff if you're going to be an
outstanding copywriter.
Second, the course doesn't just spew forth nuggets of handy
tips to be mined for becoming a better copywriter. You'll find a detailed
how-to goldmine in these pages. I thought I knew a lot about identifying
and writing to a specific, target audience. I was wrong. I've learned a
whole lot more.
Third, I had heard about copywriters who
get substantial royalties for writing "control" letters for companies
like American Express, the Wall Street Journal, and Newsweek, but I
never quite understood how they worked or knew how to compete for them.
There really is a formula to use and a system to follow. I found the
answers here.
Fourth, applying the information learned
in this course does more than help you DO better work for your clients,
it helps you GET better-paying clients. I used what I learned in this
course to write an introductory letter for a high-paying project
management contract with a magazine publisher; not only did I get the
contract but the publisher point blank told me that the reason he called
was because of my cover letter. Did I have a good, appropriate resume?
Yes. But so did the other 50+ respondents to his ad. Not one other
person attempted to use their copywriting skills in the cover letter.
And, for a writer, a cover letter is part of the audition for the job. I
doubt that I would have gotten this project if I hadn't applied what I
learned in this course.
Fifth, it took me nearly
six weeks to figure out that the
Accelerated
Copywriting Course isn't just for copywriters. It is for
every writer. One lesson I nearly overlooked is that you don't have
to be -- or want to be -- a copywriter to benefit from this course. In
fact, the contract I described above is primarily for project management
of a new publication, with only about 25% writing required. I applied
the principles from this course into writing the cover letter. And it
was the cover letter that placed me at the top of a significant pile of
very qualified candidates, netting me more than $30,000 in four months
working a part time schedule.
Well written copy can do the same to
capture a publisher's interest for your fiction, poetry, or an editor's
interest for a recurring column. Good copywriting is good marketing and
good marketing will always give you an edge to promote whatever writing
you choose to do.
I rated this course 5 stars because that's
the value it holds for someone like me; someone who doesn't solely rely
on just one kind of writing to make a living. Yet, this course isn't
right for everybody. In fact,
DON'T get this course
if you ...
... aren't serious
about building your writing career,
... won't put in the time to do the lessons,
... can't bring yourself to rethink or break old habits.
You won't become a
better copywriter by osmosis. You must become an active participant. The
lessons aren't difficult, but they are lessons you don't learn by just
reading the course material.
AWAI makes big
promises for the potential for a very lucrative copywriting career. And,
so far, I have every reason to believe they can keep those promises if
you are a "doer," not just a "wisher."
