Novel Writing Made
Easy

Are you
plot-challenged? Does your story lack a theme? Do your
characters seem one-dimensional? Do your subplots weave seamlessly
into the fabric of the story or appear as disconnected asides?
I’ve been making my
living as a working writer for more than 15 years, and as a publisher
for six. Yet, when it comes to writing a novel I am, admittedly, a
novice. I am in hopeless need of direction and instruction.
As a long-time
subscriber to several writers’ publications, I once tried to follow an
article series designed to set new novelists on the right path for
developing characters, defining plot and identifying a theme. Somewhere
around the fourth installment I lost interest. I like to have all the
information upfront. Skip around through topics. And lay it all out in
front of me at one time. Andrea Waggener’s
Novel Writing Made
Easy allows me to do just that. It’s eight chapters of “what to
do” information accompanied by a task book that forces you to answer
questions and work through exercises that get you to identify all
the specifics for your novel. It methodically moves you forward. It's
helping me to dust off my three year old work-in-progress manuscript and
breathe new life into it's people, places, and plot.
Now, I’m the kind of
writer that prefers to just sit down at the keyboard and “let ‘er rip”
with whatever strikes me. Yet, forcing myself to do these exercises
clarified that writing a novel is very different from what I’m used to
doing for my nonfiction books. I’m developing a different set of skills
that are serving me well in other areas of writing.
If your novelist
skills are as challenged as mine are, you’ll find
Novel Writing Made
Easy a refreshing step-by-step alternative to trying to “wing it” on
your own. Andrea repeatedly references one of her own published novels
throughout the text. At first this annoyed me. However, I finally
realized there’s a good reason for her to do it – it’s the “proof” of
the system’s success.
