New Novelist
I have never been a big fan of
writing software designed to help writers write without
learning their craft. Anything that appears even mildly close to a
fill-in-the blank writing template, in my opinion, does not serve you in
the long run.
Having said that, I am an advocate of
software aids that help you organize and understand the process of
writing. If you struggle from distraction
and disorganization more than lack of creative ability, New
Novelist may very well be the answer to developing the critical
structure for plot, scenes, and character development.
New Novelist also lets you work the way
you think. Move backwards and forwards; jump from beginning to middle
and back again; or write the ending first.
You will work with templates that help
to form your characters and scenes. And the software solicits details
that are stored in a useable format so you can eliminate the hours of
rifling through notes and partially written thoughts you've collected
over several months - or years.
The software was developed by Richard
Lee, a UK businessman, and emulates instruction methods used by the UK
creative writing course at the University of East Anglia, the leading
university for creative writing in the UK. So, despite the occasional
spelling differences with my American dictionary, the process
development being followed is very credible.
The software is easy to install and
easy to use. You don't need to be a computer whiz to learn. You can be
up and writing in less than fifteen minutes. There is also a very nice
feature that automatically formats your final copy into a manuscript
ready to submit to agents and publishers.
Whether you are a new novelist or an
experienced one, if you find yourself staring at your blank computer
screen and struggling to decide, "where do I go from here?" -- New
Novelist may prove to be the first, second, third, fourth and last steps
in the right direction.
