Project Matching (Work
pursues you)
Akin to listing services are the
dual listing services, sometimes referred to as project
matching. These services list postings from people who need the
work done, just like the listing services and job post sites.
However, these sites also invite freelancers to post their
profiles so that job posters can choose you to hire on the spot,
or invite you to bid on the project. So, if you've got a great
profile in a high-demand skill or talent, work (sometimes)
pursues you.
There are several reasons why
Elance has
earned five stars from me. One is that they truly are a project
listing site for freelancers and contractors, not a job listing
site. Another reason is that you can actually view what other
freelancers have earned by being members of
Elance. And
those earnings are just for the jobs bid and won on the site,
not any subsequent or recurring work they have received by
establishing relationships with those same clients. The third
reason is because they do something that I have not yet found
another project listing service to do. While they cannot
guarantee that a project lister will choose an
Elance
freelancer, the project lister must pay a fee if they receive
five or more job bidders and one of those contractors is NOT
chosen. This penalty for job posters helps to protect the freelancers who pay to access
those job opportunities. If all that isn't enough, consider that
they were rated the Best of the Web by Forbes in 2003, and are
also a "reliability certified" company by the Better Business
Bureau. The stamp of approval for any Internet
business says a lot about their ability to perform.
As with any listing site, there
are a number of membership levels for you to choose from. Most people start with the free listing and slowly work their
way up to the paid subscriptions. I like to start at the top and
"come out swinging" so I don't waste my time dipping one toe
into the pool at a time. For me, top level membership costs like these
are minimal compared to some of the promotional investments I've
made to attract freelance work over the years. If you can afford
to invest in yourself, skip the free membership and choose a paid one, even
if it's only for a month or two so that you really give yourself
all of the ammunition you need to attract a client that could
prove to be a long-term, ongoing, profitable partnership. To

Sologig is the contractor and
freelance job site spin-off for Career Builder, one of
the
largest and best known job banks on the Internet. The main
Career Builder database is so large that it can become
overwhelming to try to sort through.
Sologig was set up as a stand alone site specifically for
creative job seekers.
As with
any of the listing sites, the free services give you what you
pay for ... little or no assistance or tools to help you land
the job or assignment. The monthly membership upgrade buys you
premium placement for your profile so employers and job posters
can find you. Membership also buys other perks, including help
to write a job-winning resume. When I originally reviewed the Sologig jobs database in mid July of 2006,
there was one job posting, about a month and a half old.
However, after revisiting the site in April of 2007 I was
pleasantly surprised to see that the offerings and variety of
jobs has dramatically increased, with a mix of both contract and
permanent placement positions. The site is also much easier to
navigate and user-friendly. I have not taken full advantage of
the site and its add-on services, but the good news is that you
can apply for a job or contract without paying a dime and is
worth taking the time to review the job boards each week. To find out more,
